KTM 850cc MotoGP prototype shows high performance in initial tests
Initial tests of the new 850cc MotoGP prototype have shown performance levels that exceed expectations. During testing conducted after the Austrian Grand Prix, Spanish rider Pedro Acosta recorded lap times on the KTM 850cc prototype that were faster than his previous times on the current 1,000cc competition machines.
The 2027 regulations aim to reduce engine displacement from 1,000cc to 850cc to improve safety, limit technical complexity, and balance competition. While organizers initially anticipated lap times would drop by two to three seconds, Acosta’s performance suggests the performance gap may be less significant than predicted. The tests focused on evaluating engine performance, electronics, and the new Pirelli tires scheduled for use in 2027.
