KTM overhauls seven engines to resolve MotoGP power issues

KTM engineers have completed a major overhaul of seven engines at the Munderfing manufacturing site following a series of unexpected power cuts during the current MotoGP season. The procedure, described as a “surgical” operation, involved disassembling the engine blocks to replace faulty components, including valves, washers, gaskets, and lubricants.

While the manufacturer has not officially confirmed the specific parts replaced, technical indications suggest the issues may stem from the valves, a problem previously encountered by Yamaha in 2020 due to manufacturing deviations. To conduct this work, KTM obtained permission from other manufacturers and operated under the supervision of governing bodies to ensure strict security compliance.

The refurbished engines are scheduled to return to racing rotation starting with the Aragon Grand Prix. Previously, KTM had resorted to limiting engine power on certain circuits to mitigate failure risks, though it remains uncertain if this power-limiting measure will continue.
