KTM seeks rival approval to inspect faulty MotoGP engines

KTM motorsport director Pit Beirer confirmed that the Austrian manufacturer’s RC16 MotoGP bike has an internal engine problem. The fault has caused a series of technical failures this season, including clutch and ride‑height device issues and engine shutdowns that led to a serious crash at the Catalunya Grand Prix when Pedro Acosta’s bike stopped and Alex Marquez collided from behind.

Because MotoGP regulations impose an engine‑development freeze, KTM cannot open the sealed engines without the consent of all other manufacturers. Aprilia has agreed to grant that permission, with Beirer thanking Fabiano Sterlacchini and Massimo Rivola for their assistance. KTM plans to use the summer break to conduct a thorough investigation and resolve the safety risk.

The issue highlights broader concerns about reliability and rider safety in the MotoGP championship, and it underscores the need for cooperation among the four rival manufacturers under the sport’s technical rules.
