KTMMOB raises concerns over air quality and energy storage in Northern Cyprus
The Union of Chambers of Cyprus Turkish Engineers and Architects (KTMMOB) has raised concerns regarding air quality and energy management in Northern Cyprus. Görkem Çelik, President of KTMMOB, emphasized that clean air is a constitutional right, highlighting several factors contributing to pollution. These include the ongoing impact of a fire at the Güngör Solid Waste Landfill, which has affected air quality in Nicosia and surrounding areas, as well as emissions from the Kalecik and Teknecik power plants and dust from urban construction.
In a separate technical report released by the Chamber of Environmental, Electrical, and Chemical Engineers, experts discussed the role of battery storage in energy management. The report suggests that large-scale battery use could provide short-term solutions to electricity outages and assist in voltage regulation for solar plants. However, officials warned of significant risks, including fire hazards and the need for a comprehensive lifecycle management system for imported batteries to ensure safe disposal and prevent environmental damage.
