KTOEÖS announces teacher strikes in Güzelyurt and Lefke

The Cyprus Turkish Secondary Education Teachers' Union (KTOEÖS) has announced an afternoon strike and protest in schools across the Güzelyurt and Lefke regions. This action follows similar protests held last week in the Famagusta area.

The union cites several systemic issues affecting the 2026-2027 academic year, including delayed infrastructure improvements that have forced students to learn in containers. KTOEÖS also reported a shortage of 65 teachers across 24 different branches, leading to overcrowded classrooms.

Furthermore, the union criticized the practice of bringing in temporary teachers from Turkey while local teachers await appointments. Other grievances include inadequate measures against peer bullying, school safety concerns, and unresolved disputes regarding the rights and taxation of teachers appointed after 2011. The union stated that the government's push for a ‘full-day’ school model is being imposed without addressing essential infrastructure, staffing, or equipment needs.
