KTR establishes secondary battery testing infrastructure in Gumi
The Korea Testing & Research Institute (KTR) has completed the Battery as a Service (BaaS) testing and demonstration center in the Gumi 1st National Industrial Complex. The project, a joint effort by KTR, Gyeongsangbuk-do, and Gumi City, involved a total investment of 40.4 billion won.
The center is designed to provide full-lifecycle testing and certification services for secondary batteries, ranging from initial development to the recycling and reuse of end-of-life batteries. Facilities include specialized buildings for data centers, battery disassembly, performance and safety evaluation, and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) testing. This infrastructure aims to meet the rising demand for battery certification as electric vehicle adoption grows.
Additionally, KTR, Gyeongsangbuk-do, and Gumi City plan to invest 23.4 billion won by 2029 to establish an AI-based integrated support center for reused batteries. This future facility will utilize artificial intelligence to collect and analyze lifecycle data, providing services such as diagnostic evaluation, precision inspection, and repacking.
In a related development, local authorities held a meeting with major investors in Gumi, including Samsung Electronics, Samsung SDS, LG Innotek, and SK Siltron. These companies have planned or ongoing investments totaling approximately 23.5 trillion won in sectors such as AI robotics, data centers, and semiconductor materials.
