KU Leuven faces backlash over Quran recitation during Catholic Mass
The inclusion of a Quran recitation during an academic year opening Mass at KU Leuven, a Catholic university in Belgium, has sparked significant controversy regarding religious identity and inclusivity.
Critics, including MP Darya Safai and the student association KVHV-Leuven, argue that the university is prioritizing interfaith dialogue at the expense of its own Catholic roots. Safai described the move as a “cultural denial,” questioning the use of religious texts that some interpret as prescribing violence toward non-believers as symbols of universal tolerance. Similarly, KVHV-Leuven suggested the institution is choosing Islam over its own identity.
On the other hand, supporters of the practice, including former rector and theology professor Lieven Boeve, maintain that Eucharistic celebrations can remain open to different beliefs without abandoning Catholic foundations. The university has previously incorporated Islamic prayers into its ceremonies as part of an ongoing effort toward interreligious dialogue.
