Sea turtles reach Mediterranean in large numbers across Mersin and Aydın

The nesting season for endangered sea turtles, including Caretta caretta and Chelonia mydas, has concluded in several key regions of Turkey. In Mersin, approximately 100,000 hatchlings reached the Mediterranean Sea from five major nesting sites: Anamur, Göksu Delta, Erdemli Alata, Davultepe, and Kazanlı. Dr. Mahmut Ergene from Mersin University noted that while the number of nests in Davultepe was lower than previous years, this is considered part of a natural cycle.

In the Aydın province, specifically around Kuşadası and Didim, conservationists reported a total of 21 nesting sites this season. A notable event occurred at the Orsen Sitesi beach in Kuşadası, where a surprise nest was discovered in an area previously affected by flooding from the SSK Stream. Bahattin Sürücü, President of the Association for the Protection of Ecosystems and Nature Lovers (EKODOSD), reported that out of 68 eggs, 45 hatchlings reached the sea during the night, while 22 others were found stuck in the sand and were manually assisted to the water.

These incidents highlight the resilience of sea turtles, as they continue to utilize various coastal areas for nesting despite environmental challenges such as previous flooding and debris.
