Kuala Lumpur to deploy 200 sensors to monitor urban tree health

Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) will install 200 sensors on urban trees to monitor their health in real time. This initiative aims to provide immediate indicators to a control center, allowing authorities to identify whether trees are healthy or pose a danger to the public.

Mayor Datuk Seri Fadlun Mak Ujud stated that the sensors will be placed approximately 1.2 meters above the ground. This project follows a first phase where 25,000 trees were mapped using funding from the Ministry of Digital. The monitoring will include long-standing trees, such as those on Jalan Ampang, to ensure they are preserved through maintenance—like supporting potentially falling branches—rather than being felled.

For the second phase, 200 additional trees will be planted, and a budget request will be made for next year to add 400 more trees within the urban area.
