Kubwa gas explosion damages shops after vehicle crash
A vehicle collision triggered a massive gas explosion at a retail outlet near Liberty Junction in Kubwa, Abuja, on Sunday morning. The incident, which occurred around 6:15 a.m., caused significant damage to at least nine nearby shops, a police traffic post, and several vehicles and motorcycles.
Reports indicate the explosion was caused by a motorist—possibly driving against traffic—losing control and ramming into the gas facility. The impact ignited a fire that sent a large fireball into the air and caused buildings in nearby areas, such as Dantata Estate, to shake.
A driver and a child were rescued from the wreckage and taken to a medical facility for treatment. Emergency response teams, including the Federal Fire Service, FCT Fire Service, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), arrived at the scene to contain the blaze and prevent further escalation. While the explosion caused widespread panic and property damage, authorities worked to secure the area and restore normalcy.
