Kuching authorities investigate fire safety concerns at Stutong Market

The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has launched an investigation into the readiness of emergency firefighting equipment at Stutong Market following a vehicle fire on September 3, 2026. The incident raised concerns regarding the accessibility of safety tools, with reports suggesting that a fire hose lacked a water supply and several fire extinguishers were locked inside an office. MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng stated that the council is awaiting a report to determine the circumstances and noted that missing extinguishers are being treated as an internal security issue.

In a separate community effort, the JKKK Sekama committee has initiated a fire safety awareness programme in the Sekama area. The initiative involves distributing fire safety posters to local residents and businesses to encourage vigilance and proactive hazard recognition. The programme aims to foster community cooperation in fire prevention to reduce reliance on emergency responses after incidents have already begun.
