Kuching Parents Charged with Child Neglect After 7‑Year‑Old Assault

A 39‑year‑old truck driver and his 38‑year‑old wife, a cleaner, appeared before two Sessions Court hearings in Kuching, Sarawak, on charges of neglecting their 7‑year‑old son. The prosecution alleges the parents left the child unsupervised on 8 July, during which he pushed a peer off a flat‑level balcony, causing injury. The case is filed under Section 33(1)(a) of the Child Act, which carries a fine of up to RM 20,000 or up to five years’ imprisonment.

Judge Iris Awen Jon granted the father bail of RM 8,000 with a local surety, while Judge Noorhisham Mohd Jaafar set the mother's bail at RM 5,000, also with a local surety. The court scheduled a retrial for 28 August to determine further proceedings.

The incident highlights concerns over child supervision and legal accountability for parental neglect in Malaysia.
