Kudus Regency celebrates 477th anniversary with MURI record-breaking dance

A colossal performance of the Tari Lajur Caping Kalo dance has set a new record in the Museum Rekor Dunia Indonesia (MURI). The event, held at the Kudus Regency Pendopo on September 26, 2026, featured between 670 and 675 dancers to celebrate the 477th anniversary of Kudus Regency.

The performance aimed to preserve the local heritage of the Caping Kalo, a traditional head covering. Officials noted that the number of artisans capable of making these traditional hats is dwindling, with reports suggesting only three artisans remain.

Indonesian Deputy Minister of Culture, Giring Ganesha, emphasized that preservation must go beyond performances to include the regeneration of artisans and the transfer of knowledge from masters to the younger generation. The Ministry of Culture has expressed support for the Kudus Regency government in proposing the Caping Kalo as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage.
