Kukuljanovo industrial zone evacuated after high gas concentrations
Extremely high concentrations of dangerous gases, including hydrogen sulfide and ammonia, have been detected in the sewage system of the Kukuljanovo industrial zone in Croatia. Following reports of unpleasant odors, emergency teams including firefighters, police, and representatives from the Rijeka Waterworks and Sewerage (ViK) responded to the site.
Measurements recorded concentrations of hydrogen sulfide reaching up to 300 ppm and ammonia exceeding 200 ppm. While authorities noted that these levels do not pose an immediate threat to health in open outdoor spaces, they are highly dangerous in enclosed areas, where they can cause loss of consciousness and respiratory irritation. As a precaution, the area was evacuated and production at a nearby fish processing plant was halted.
This incident marks a recurring issue in the area, specifically near the Orada Adriatic plant. The location was the site of a fatal tragedy two years ago when a young worker died from hydrogen sulfide poisoning. The exact source of the recurring gas leaks remains unknown, and the State Inspectorate is expected to investigate the cause to prevent further incidents.
