Kuélap named one of National Geographic’s top 25 world destinations for 2027
The Kuélap archaeological site in Peru's Amazonas region has been selected by National Geographic as one of the 25 destinations in its ‘Best of the World 2027’ list. Described as the ‘Machu Picchu of the north,’ the Chachapoyas citadel is recognized as one of South America’s last great archaeological adventures.
Built by the Chachapoyas culture around 500 AD, the site served as a stronghold against Inca rule. The recognition highlights ongoing conservation efforts, including the restoration of a 17-meter-high southern wall following a 2022 collapse. Visitors in 2027 will have access to new trails and exhibitions, including a path opening in June that leads to previously inaccessible sectors of Malcapampa, allowing views of active archaeological work.
Peru’s Ministry of Culture stated that this recognition aligns with current efforts to research, conserve, and recover the monument to ensure its long-term preservation. Kuélap is the second Peruvian site to appear on this prestigious list, following Choquerirao in 2023.
