Kulon Progo celebrates 75th anniversary with cultural ceremonies

The Kulon Progo Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) held a special plenary session to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Kulon Progo. The session was conducted using Javanese as the medium of communication to strengthen local cultural identity and character. During the meeting, officials reflected on the region's history, noting that before its formal establishment via Law No. 18/1951, the area was divided between the Yogyakarta Sultanate and the Pakualaman Principality.

As part of the anniversary celebrations, the local government organized a symbolic ceremony involving the lighting of 7,500 torches. Regent Agung Setyawan stated that the fire represents the spirit and positive energy required for regional development. The event also included a brief, controlled power outage to enhance the solemnity of the torch-lighting ceremony. Addressing social media criticism regarding the event, the Regent emphasized that the celebrations aim to foster community spirit and unity under the theme ‘One Soul, One Feeling, from Kulon Progo for Indonesia’.
