Kulon Progo implements ban on organic waste at Banyuroto landfill

The Kulon Progo regency in Yogyakarta has enforced a new rule, effective 1 July 2026, that rejects all organic waste from being deposited at the Banyuroto landfill. Despite the policy, the Environment Agency (DLH) found that household waste, especially from residences outside market areas, continues to reach the landfill, indicating incomplete compliance with source‑separation mandates.

To curb the problem, the regency launched a program targeting a 20‑30 % reduction in waste volume at Banyuroto. The initiative focuses on strengthening waste‑sorting habits at the household level and utilizes Reduce‑Reuse‑Recycle (TPS3R) centers, though these facilities report being overwhelmed by mixed waste. Enforcement currently relies on education and refusing trucks that bring mixed loads, rather than legal penalties. The DLH continues monitoring markets and public containers, noting persistent mis‑sorting and the need for further community outreach.
