KulturRegion Karlsruhe celebrates Open Monument Day
The KulturRegion Karlsruhe saw significant engagement during this year's Open Monument Day, showcasing a diverse range of historical sites and cultural treasures across the region. Participating locations, including the Eremitage in Waghäusel, the Iffezheim racecourse, the Schwarzach Minster, and the Städtische Galerie Fruchthalle in Rastatt, reported high visitor numbers, with some institutions more than doubling their attendance compared to the previous year.
One notable highlight included guided tours of the secret World War II bunker located beneath the Karlsruhe main station. Situated under platforms 11 and 12, these air-raid shelters were constructed as part of a 1941 program to protect travelers and railway staff from aerial and gas attacks. While many such structures in the city are now used for storage or remain vacant, the station's bunker was opened for specialized tours.
The regional success is attributed to a coordinated promotional effort using a cross-regional program flyer, which encouraged residents to explore historical sites beyond their immediate municipalities.
