A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Kumamoto Prefecture on 28 July 2026 at 16:27 local time, with a hypocentre about 10 km deep. The tremor reached the maximum Shindo level 7, prompting a tsunami advisory that was lifted a few hours later.

Authorities reported at least one fatality and more than 50 injuries. About a dozen houses collapsed, and an explosion at the Aeon Mall in Kashima trapped dozens of people; police say 20‑30 employees remain missing. Roughly 45,000‑48,000 households lost electricity, and major infrastructure was disrupted: JR Kyushu halted Shinkansen and local train services, and Kumamoto Airport’s runway was closed.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi ordered emergency measures and urged residents to stay vigilant for aftershocks. The three nuclear plants operated by Kyushu Electric Power reported no abnormalities. Emergency shelters were opened for thousands of displaced residents.
