A magnitude‑7.1 earthquake struck Kumamoto prefecture, Japan, on 28 July 2026, killing at least 38 people, injuring 101 and damaging more than 3,800 homes. About 8,500 residents were evacuated.

Five Vietnamese workers rescued a 90‑year‑old Japanese woman from the rubble of a collapsed building; Japanese media outlets such as NHK and Yomiuri Shimbun praised their bravery. One Vietnamese labourer died and another was injured in the disaster.

The Vietnamese community in Kumamoto, numbering roughly 7,000–7,500 people (about 1,000 in Yatsushiro and 350 in Uki), organised relief efforts. Community leaders Lê Trâm and Xuân Hoa reported that local authorities supplied food and water to evacuation centres, while volunteers distributed additional water, food and essential supplies. Supermarkets reopened on 2 August, easing shortages.

Rescue operations at the Nippon Paper Industries plant in Yatsushiro and the Aeon Mall in Kumamoto were completed, with many trapped victims recovered. The Japanese government prepared 73 hotels to accommodate around 2,200 people for a second‑phase evacuation.
