Kumamoto earthquake spurs survivor stories and AI-fueled misinformation

A powerful earthquake struck Kumamoto, Japan, causing widespread damage. Survivors described the intense shaking, saying, “The shaking was terrifying, like the ground itself was coming apart beneath us.” Communities formed human chains to rescue neighbors, shelters opened for the displaced, and emergency responders mobilised, exposing critical gaps in preparedness. In the quake’s aftermath, social‑media platforms were inundated with false and AI‑generated images and claims—ranging from alleged terrorist attacks to fabricated volcanic eruptions.
