Kumamoto earthquake triggers surge in AI-generated disinformation on X
Following the Kumamoto earthquake, a surge of disinformation and AI-generated content has disrupted information flow on social media platforms, particularly X. Reports indicate that generative AI is being used to create fake rescue requests, manipulated images of victims, and fraudulent videos. A critical issue identified is the “double reversal” where generative AI, often used by people to verify information, is incorrectly labeling authentic footage as fake, leading users to distrust legitimate updates.
The proliferation of false information is driven by various motives. Some actors aim to spread propaganda or conspiracy theories, such as claims of “artificial earthquakes.” Others are motivated by financial gain through X’s “Creator Ads Revenues Sharing” program, where high-engagement posts—even those containing falsehoods—generate advertising revenue.
Experts warn that these activities can overwhelm emergency services and prevent genuine requests for aid, such as water shortages or rescue needs, from reaching local authorities. Unlike search engines that prioritize source reliability, social media timelines optimize for rapid engagement, which inherently favors sensational and unverified content during crises.
