Kumamoto Earthquake: Yatsushiro faces water crisis and recovery efforts

Following the magnitude 7.1 Kumamoto Earthquake on July 28, 2026, Yatsushiro City in Kumamoto Prefecture faces significant infrastructure challenges. While municipal water services are expected to be restored by late August, approximately half of the local population relies on well water, many of which have been depleted, contaminated, or experienced lowered water levels due to the tremor.

Local businesses have stepped in to provide essential aid. Raifuji Shoten, a prominent local vendor of the famous 'Ayuyasandai' ekiben, resumed operations shortly after the disaster to provide low-cost meals and food relief to residents. Despite damage to their headquarters near Yatsushiro Station, the company utilized donated generators to preserve food supplies and offered meals such as unagi-meshi at significantly reduced prices to support those in need.

The University of Tokyo's Disaster Management Training Center has also commenced emergency investigations and support activities in the region.
