Kumamoto evacuation shelters grapple with extreme heat and food safety concerns

Following the magnitude‑7 Kumamoto earthquake, about 500‑600 evacuees are staying at the Yatsushiro City General Gymnasium, which remains powered with running water and air‑conditioning despite a summer high of 35.2 °C. Residents share the cool space, sleep near the vents, and appreciate the available toilets, while other shelters without climate control reach temperatures near 38 °C.

Health officials warn that heatstroke and food‑borne illness are major risks. Professor Mieko Ishii of International University of Health and Welfare emphasized that “direct sunlight is the most dangerous” and urged frequent hydration, avoidance of midday outdoor activity, and light exercise for those sleeping in vehicles. Shelter staff continue hot meals to maintain energy, but stress the need for immediate consumption to prevent spoilage.
