Kumamoto earthquake death toll reaches 39 as relief efforts continue

The death toll from the 7.1-magnitude earthquake that struck Kumamoto Prefecture on July 28 has risen to 39. Of these, 36 deaths were attributed directly to the tremor, while one was a suspected disaster-related death due to heatstroke. Total casualties have reached 205, with 23 people critically injured. The earthquake caused significant structural damage, including the destruction or partial collapse of approximately 1,500 buildings, and left tens of thousands without water.

Relief efforts are underway, with U.S. Forces Japan airlifting approximately 16 tons of drinking water to the region. Nintendo has pledged to donate 50 million yen to the Japanese Red Cross and will provide free repairs for damaged consoles and peripherals for residents in designated disaster zones until February 2027.

Scientific surveys of the Hinagu Fault Zone indicate that a 38-kilometer surface rupture occurred, with a portion matching the location of the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake sequence. This has raised concerns regarding future seismic activity. Meanwhile, survivors in evacuation centers face additional challenges from extreme summer heat and the approach of Typhoon Dolphin.
