A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Kumamoto Prefecture in southwestern Japan on Tuesday, causing widespread destruction. The official death toll rose to 35, with hundreds of others injured. More than 9,000 residents were moved to evacuation centers as extreme heat compounded the emergency.
A gas‑leak explosion at the Aeon Mall in Kashima killed seven people, injured five, and trapped many shoppers under the collapsed building. Rescue teams rescued twelve people from the rubble and continued searching for additional survivors well beyond the critical 72‑hour window. Separate incidents included the collapse of a smokestack at a Nippon Paper Industries mill in Yatsushiro, which accounted for five of the fatalities.
Authorities and NGOs have mobilised emergency shelters, medical aid and supplies, while infrastructure such as water, electricity and transport services remains severely disrupted.
