Kumamoto, Japan shaken by magnitude‑7.1 quake, aftershock threat and factory shutdowns
A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Kumamoto Prefecture on 28 February, re‑activating the Hinagu fault that produced the 2016 disaster. The quake’s shallow depth of about 10 km caused intense shaking (JMA intensity 7) and prompted authorities to warn of further strong aftershocks within the next two to three days, with the possibility of another quake up to magnitude 8.
The tremor collapsed parts of the historic Yatsushiro shrine and destroyed the Ion Mall, killing at least 13 people and leaving several missing. About 7,700 residents were moved to roughly 440 emergency shelters, while power, water and transport networks were heavily disrupted – highways buckled, Shinkansen services halted, and the airport briefly closed.
Industrial activity in the region was also hit. Taiwan’s TSMC halted production at its Kumamoto plant and delayed work on a second facility. Sony, Renesas, Toyota, Honda and other manufacturers suspended operations, raising concerns for supply‑chain impacts across electronics and automotive sectors. Logistics firms suspended courier services, and postal operations were suspended throughout the prefecture.
