Kumamoto railway lines fully reopen after July earthquake
All railway lines in areas affected by the July 28 earthquake in Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan, have resumed operations. The final restoration occurred on Tuesday with the reopening of a 23.6-kilometer section of the Hisatsu Orange Railway line between Yatsushiro and Higo-Tanoura stations.
The earthquake caused damage to more than 100 locations along the Hisatsu Orange Railway, including deformed tracks and damaged platforms near the epicenter. Seiki Nakamura, president of the third-sector railway operator, expressed satisfaction that the entire line is once again operational.
Other regional rail services have also returned to normal following the disaster. The Kyushu Shinkansen resumed operations between Kumamoto and Shin-Minamata stations on September 18, and JR Kyushu restored service on a section of its Kagoshima Line between Uto and Yatsushiro on Saturday.
