Kumar Sangakkara describes discriminatory encounter with Ryanair staff

Former Sri Lankan cricket captain Kumar Sangakkara has publicly criticized Ryanair following a confrontation with airline personnel at Dublin Airport. Sangakkara described the encounter during a trip from Bristol to Dublin as shocking, threatening, and discriminatory toward his family.

Speaking to the BBC Sinhala Service, Sangakkara explained that despite holding UK e-Visas and receiving approved boarding passes via the airline app, the family faced friction during pre-boarding checks. He noted that while they attempted to present their digital documentation, the interaction with ground handlers was characterized by an aggressive demeanor and hostility.

Ryanair defended its staff, asserting that the dispute arose because Sangakkara initially declined to present mandatory visa documentation required for verification during routine checks. The incident has sparked broader public debate regarding the treatment of passengers from developing nations and the scrutiny faced by those traveling with passports that lack visa-free mobility in Western regions.
