Kumasi faces month-long scheduled power outages

The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have announced a month of scheduled weekday power outages in parts of Kumasi. The outages are set to begin on Friday, October 30, and continue through November 29, 2026, occurring between 9am and 5pm.

The disruptions are necessary to complete the final stage of the 161kV Anwomaso–Ahodwo transmission line upgrade. GRIDCo reports that 70 percent of the project is complete, with the remaining work involving the stringing of high-voltage conductors. Electricity must be switched off during this phase to ensure the safety of engineers and the public.

While residents have expressed frustration over intermittent power interruptions, ECG has stated that there is no formal load-shedding timetable for the Ashanti Region. The company attributed recent unannounced outages to unexpected faults rather than planned load management.
