Kumasi Hospital removes massive 880g bladder stone

Medical professionals at Kumasi Hospital in Ghana's Ashanti Region have successfully removed an exceptionally large bladder stone from a 49-year-old man. The patient, identified as Akoto, had reportedly suffered from persistent pain and urinary difficulties for nearly 30 years.

According to Dr. Samuel Koranteng Asante, the hospital's Chief Executive Officer, the stone initially weighed approximately 980 grams upon removal. After being dried for more than 24 hours, the stone weighed 880 grams. The oval-shaped object measured roughly 11.8 centimeters in length, 9.5 centimeters in width, and nearly 8 centimeters in thickness.

Dr. Asante noted that a review of medical literature did not reveal a comparable documented case within Africa. While the size is remarkable, medical officials stated that independent verification would be required to establish it as an official record. The condition was linked to a narrowing in the ureter, which prevented the bladder from emptying completely.
