Kumasi to endure three‑month power outages as GRIDCo upgrades transmission line

Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) will begin a three‑month upgrade of the Kumasi‑Anwomaso transmission line on 20 July. The project will raise the line’s capacity from 364 MW to 1,000 MW to meet the growing residential and industrial demand in Kumasi, the country’s second‑largest city.

During construction, the existing line will be dismantled and a new line erected within the same right‑of‑way, avoiding large‑scale demolition. Temporary daytime outages are expected, with electricity restored each evening. Residents will receive advance notice of each outage. China Water Engineering, the contractor, has completed 56 of the 60 required transmission towers. GRIDCo will also upgrade transformers at the Ahodwo substation to match the increased capacity. Energy and Green Transition Minister Dr John Abdulai Jinapor warned that delays could risk a grid collapse and urged cooperation from the public.
