Kung Fu Women's Football reaches 20 billion RMB box office, sister Zhou Wenji joins Shaolin Soccer reunion

The Stephen Chow‑directed film "Kung Fu Women's Football" premiered in mainland China on 11 July 2026. Despite sharply divided reviews, the movie has amassed more than 20 billion RMB in box‑office revenue. An end‑credits cameo links the film to the 2001 classic "Shaolin Soccer", with actors Chen Guokun and Lin Zicong appearing on the stadium seats.

A recent "Shaolin Soccer" cast reunion, the first in over two decades, featured veterans Lo Ka‑ying, Li Jian‑ren and others. Stephen Chow himself was absent, but his sister Zhou Wenji – who serves as executive director of his listed company and handles many of his business affairs – was reported to have attended. Zhou Wenji has long been described as the director’s most trusted confidante.

Actress Zhang Xiaofei became the first post‑85 female star to join the 100‑billion‑RMB box‑office club, with her films now totaling over 120 billion RMB. Fellow cast member Zhang Yixing also crossed the 100‑billion mark, becoming the first post‑90 male actor to do so. Competition from new releases has reduced the film’s theater share, but its financial impact remains significant.
