Kuniko Yamada sparks controversy with remarks on aging men

Japanese television personality Kuniko Yamada has sparked controversy following remarks made on the Kansai TV program ‘Dot Connect’ regarding aging men and marriage. During a segment discussing rising divorce rates among long-term couples, Yamada, who has been married for 26 years, stated that while women remain energetic as they age, men become ‘nothing more than objects’ due to declining physical functions.

Yamada further expressed a desire to ‘become a widow as soon as possible’ when asked if she had considered divorce. While co-star Toru Hashimoto suggested such bluntness might stem from a close relationship with her husband, the comments drew significant backlash on social media. Critics argued that her remarks crossed the line from personal humor to gender discrimination, noting that such language would likely cause a major outcry if the genders were reversed.

Despite her harsh words, Yamada noted that her husband had driven her to Tokyo Station that very morning, suggesting a level of domestic support. The controversy highlights a growing tension between traditional comedic styles involving ‘poisonous tongue’ remarks and modern social standards regarding gender-based sensitivity.
