KunlunChem cancels planned electrolyte factory in Szolnok
KunlunChem Hungary Kft. has announced the cancellation of its planned electrolyte factory in Szolnok, Hungary. The Chinese company stated that it is withdrawing from the project out of respect for the local community and its expressed wishes.
The original 40 billion HUF investment was intended to establish the company's first European facility, which would have served major automotive manufacturers like BMW and Mercedes. The project was expected to create between 120 and 140 new jobs.
The withdrawal follows months of uncertainty and local opposition. Concerns raised by residents and city officials included environmental impacts, water protection, the handling of hazardous materials, and logistics. In April 2026, the Szolnok City Council withdrew its principle support for battery industry investments, and the project subsequently lost its status as a key national economic investment in July.
Political figures have also weighed in on the decision. Prime Minister Péter Magyar stated during a visit to Szolnok that no electrolyte factory would be built in the city under the current administration. Szolnok Mayor Mihály Györfi characterized the cancellation as a victory against previous attempts to implement the project without local consent.
