Kunming International Flower Auction manages massive global flower trades
The Kunming International Flower Auction and Trading Center (KIFA) in Yunnan Province, China, operates as one of the world’s largest flower trading hubs. The facility serves as a major supply point, with Yunnan province accounting for seven out of every ten fresh flower stems sold in the Chinese market.
To manage perishable goods, KIFA utilizes a unique reverse auction model. At 13:00 daily, electronic trading clocks begin at a high starting price and gradually decrease. Brokers compete to secure orders by clicking buttons as prices drop, with transactions often completing in mere seconds. The fastest recorded transaction took just 0.04 seconds.
In 2023, the center facilitated the trade of over 2.34 billion cut flowers across 40 species and 3,000 varieties, distributing them to China and 40 other countries and regions. The 160,000 square meter complex hosts approximately 3,100 registered brokers and manages a daily volume of 4.5 to 7 million stems, which can surge to over 11 million during peak holidays.
