Kunsthistorisches Museum explores Ptolemaic power struggles

The Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna has launched a new exhibition exploring the dramatic power struggles of the Ptolemaic dynasty, specifically focusing on the rivalry between Cleopatra and her sister, Arsinoë.

The exhibition centers on historical mysteries surrounding the ancient Mediterranean, including the discovery of an unusual octagonal tomb in Ephesus, located in modern-day Turkey. For decades, it was theorized that the tomb contained the remains of Arsinoë, who had sought asylum in the Temple of Artemis before allegedly being murdered on Cleopatra's orders.

However, recent DNA analysis conducted by researchers in Vienna has challenged this theory, suggesting the skeleton actually belongs to a young boy. Despite this scientific update, the exhibition uses these historical narratives and approximately 100 artifacts to illustrate the interconnected political and cultural landscape of the ancient world.
