Kuomintang targets 1.5 million young voters for 2026 elections
Kuomintang (KMT) officials and youth representatives are intensifying efforts to mobilize young voters ahead of the 2026 local elections in Taiwan. Legislator Li Yen-hsiu highlighted that nearly 1.5 million young voters, including first-time voters from 2022 and 2026, represent a critical demographic that will shape the future of Taiwanese politics.
Li identified several factors contributing to shifts in youth political alignment, including the rise of the Taiwan People's Party, dissatisfaction with the ruling Democratic Progressive Party regarding low wages, housing, and employment, and a diminishing impact of anti-China ideological rhetoric. She advocated for cooperation between opposition parties to emphasize political ideals and social justice.
Simultaneously, the KMT Youth Affairs Development Committee launched the ‘2026 Youth Action Trilogy’ initiative. This campaign, branded as the ‘K-Bar Action Line,’ aims to encourage young people to return to their hometowns to vote. The initiative focuses on addressing the ‘K-shaped economy’ and the challenges of the AI era, seeking to provide a platform for youth to influence local governance and public policy.
