Kuomintang warns judicial warnings may chill cross-strait exchanges

The Kuomintang (KMT) held a press conference to criticize the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) administration regarding judicial warnings sent to local village chiefs. KMT officials and legal experts expressed concern that recent anti-bribery propaganda from prosecutors may create a ‘chilling effect’ on normal cross-strait exchanges.

Legal representatives argued that while anti-bribery efforts are necessary, the judicial authorities must clearly define the legal boundaries between lawful exchange activities and illegal acts. They warned that failing to distinguish between legitimate cultural or historical visits and actual bribery could cause citizens to cease all cross-strait interactions to avoid perceived legal risks. One lawyer noted that many participants in such exchanges engage in non-political activities, such as sightseeing, and should not be intimidated by vague warnings.
