Vernon Jack recounts life at Kuper Island Residential School

Vernon Jack, an 81-year-old Tseycum First Nation Elder, has recounted his experiences living at the Kuper Island Residential School. Jack, who spent 10 years at the institution, described the period of his life as having “gone to hell.”

Located on Penelakut Island off the coast of Chemainus, the school was operated by the Roman Catholic Church and received funding from the Department of Indian Affairs. The facility functioned for 86 years, from 1889 to 1975, with the stated goal of indoctrinating Indigenous children into Euro-Canadian and Christian lifestyles.

Jack recalled being taken from his family at age five after authorities informed his grandmother that she would face imprisonment if he did not attend. He noted the significant language barrier he faced upon arrival, stating it took approximately two years to learn English.
