Kupwara bridge scam: ACB chargesheets 10 for embezzlement
The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has filed a chargesheet against 10 individuals, including nine public servants and one private contractor, regarding an alleged Rs 7.12 lakh embezzlement case in Kupwara. The case involves the construction of a steel bridge at Lastiyal-Kalaroose.
The investigation revealed that the project, allotted to contractor Ghulam Mohi-ud-din Lone in September 2010, was abandoned after only partial completion. The ACB reported that government materials, such as cement and steel valued at approximately Rs 5.63 lakh, went unaccounted for. Additionally, officials are accused of fraudulently releasing a cash deposit receipt of Rs 73,000 through forged communications and releasing bill deposits of Rs 81,400 despite outstanding government liabilities.
The accused include former Executive Engineers Mohammad Sultan Sheikh and Ajit Singh Chopra, along with several other engineering and accounts officials. All 10 individuals appeared before the Special Judge, Anti-Corruption, in Baramulla, where they were granted bail. The next hearing is scheduled for November 25, 2026.
