Kurdistan Police investigate officer after video of alleged assault in Sanandaj

The Kurdistan Police Command has launched an investigation into a police officer in Sanandaj following the viral spread of a video appearing to show the physical assault of two teenagers by a patrol officer.

Yahya Elahi, the Kurdistan Police Commander, ordered an immediate review of the incident, summoning the officer involved to the provincial police inspection department. In an official statement, the police described the footage as showing “unprofessional and inappropriate behavior.”

The police also noted that the driver of the vehicle involved did not possess a driver's license, suggesting the situation could have been hazardous to the occupants. However, the Hanna Human Rights Organization condemned the incident, stating the footage shows violence against teenagers who were reportedly under the control of officers at the time of the encounter.

Police officials emphasized that maintaining “human dignity” and “citizens' rights” are core principles of the force and stated that any violations of these standards will be dealt with according to the law.
