Kuregem's Grondelsplein to become a green pedestrian zone

The Grondelsplein in Kuregem is set to be transformed into a green pedestrian zone. The project, managed by Beliris, involves the intersection of Grondelstraat, Dokter Kubornstraat, and Prévinairestraat, which is currently dominated by car traffic.

The redevelopment will prioritize pedestrians and cyclists while maintaining access for emergency services. Key features include a central playground, seating areas for community interaction, and new greenery to complement existing trees. The project also aims to improve rainwater infiltration and will include upgrades to public lighting, sewage, and technical pipelines.

To reduce car dominance, a traffic restriction will be implemented. While vehicles from Grondelsstraat can turn left into Prévinairestraat, they will no longer be able to cross the square. The works, to be carried out by contractor Eurovia in three phases, are estimated to cost 2.15 million euros and will take approximately one year to complete. This initiative is the first step in a larger masterplan to revitalize 11 hectares of public space around the Biestebroekdok.
