Kurt Beck reflects on 9/11 impact in Rhineland-Palatinate

Twenty-five years after the September 11 attacks, former Rhineland-Palatinate Minister President Kurt Beck reflects on the immediate impact the events had on the German state. Because the region hosts thousands of Americans and significant US military installations, such as Ramstein Air Base, the attacks necessitated urgent security measures.

Beck recalls the moment he witnessed the footage of the Twin Towers being struck, describing the initial difficulty in grasping that the events were reality rather than fiction. In response to the crisis, Beck coordinated with US liaison officers to increase the presence of the Bundeswehr within military barracks and the German police in surrounding residential areas and housing to ensure the protection of American personnel and facilities.
