Kurt Cobain discusses Beatles influences and preferences

Kurt Cobain, the late leader of Nirvana, expressed controversial views regarding The Beatles in past interviews. Cobain stated that John Lennon was his favorite member of the group, while he felt a sense of embarrassment toward Paul McCartney. He explained that McCartney’s polished and commercial persona stood in opposition to what he perceived as the true ‘spirit of rock,’ whereas he identified with Lennon’s more troubled nature.

Despite these personal criticisms, the musical influence of The Beatles was instrumental to Nirvana’s success. Producer Butch Vig noted that the Beatles-esque melodic qualities of the song ‘About a Girl’ were a key factor in his decision to work with the band. Cobain reportedly wrote the track after listening to the Beatles' album ‘Meet The Beatles!’, incorporating 1960s pop chord progressions and melodic structures into his songwriting.
