Kurtdereli Mehmet Pehlivan Oil Wrestling begins in Balıkesir

The 66th Traditional Kurtdereli Mehmet Pehlivan Oil Wrestling tournament has commenced in Balıkesir, hosted by the Balıkesir Metropolitan Municipality and Karesi Municipality. The event, held at the Kurtdere Er Meydanı, features 1,642 wrestlers participating over three days.

The opening ceremonies included a visit to the memorial tomb of the legendary wrestler Kurtdereli Mehmet Pehlivan, followed by religious services and the opening of the Kurtdereli Mehmet Pehlivan Memorial House. Local officials, including Balıkesir Metropolitan Mayor Ahmet Akın, attended the commemorations.

The competition will culminate on Sunday, when 73 head wrestlers will compete for the prestigious gold belt.
