Dhananjaya de Silva resigns as Sri Lanka Test captain

Dhananjaya de Silva has resigned as the Test captain of Sri Lanka with immediate effect. In a letter to the Sri Lanka Cricket selection committee, the 35-year-old all-rounder stated it was his genuine opinion that “the mantle should go down to the next generation.”

De Silva, who assumed the role in January 2024, led the team in 18 Test matches, securing seven victories. Despite his resignation from leadership, he confirmed he remains available to represent the national team as a player. Sri Lanka Cricket CEO Ashley de Silva expressed gratitude for his contributions to the longest format of the game.

Kusal Mendis has been appointed as the new Test captain. Mendis, who already leads the Sri Lankan white-ball teams in ODIs and T20Is, will take charge starting with the upcoming two-match away series against Pakistan in November. The transition comes as Sri Lanka seeks to improve its standing in the ICC World Test Championship cycle.
