Kusatsu Onsen to host experiential hot spring study tours

Lawson Travel has launched a new series of experiential entertainment tours titled ‘Yugaku no Susume Tabi’ (Recommendation of Hot Spring Studies), aimed at enhancing the value of Japanese hot spring culture and passing it on to the next generation.

The first tour in the four-part series will take place in Kusatsu Onsen, Gunma Prefecture, on November 14–15, 2026. Supervised by hot spring expert Kyoko Kitade, the program focuses on moving beyond casual enjoyment toward a deeper understanding of ‘onsen science.’

Participants will engage in activities such as fieldwork at Yubatake to observe the mechanisms of hot spring formation, learning about spring qualities and medicinal benefits, and comparing different water sources through a method similar to sake tasting. The tour also includes opportunities to experience the work of a ‘yumori’ (hot spring keeper) at a traditional inn and use scientific tools like pH meters to experience acidic springs.
