Kusum Group pharma plant in Ukraine hit by Russian drone strike

A Russian drone strike has severely damaged a pharmaceutical manufacturing facility in Sumy, Ukraine, operated by the Indian-owned Kusum Group. The attack resulted in at least one death and several injuries, with officials noting that casualty figures may rise as rescue operations continue.

The facility's main structure was largely destroyed, with preliminary damage estimates reaching at least 400 crore rupees. The Kusum Group, currently led by Indian national Rajeev Gupta, has maintained operations in the Sumy plant since 2009 despite the ongoing conflict. The company produces over 50 generic products and distributes them to various international markets, including Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and the Philippines.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the strike, which targeted what he described as an ordinary pharmaceutical warehouse. The attack occurred during a broader wave of Russian aerial strikes; reports indicate that Russia launched approximately 135 attack drones overnight, including more than 50 jet-powered Shahed drones, targeting multiple regions across Ukraine.
