Kuwait advances sustainable development through energy and diplomacy
Kuwait is advancing its commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals through both national industrial initiatives and international diplomatic advocacy.
At the industrial level, the Kuwait National Petroleum Company (KNPC) plans to establish a biorefinery to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and low-carbon aviation fuel (LCAF). The company is conducting feasibility studies to explore local production and fuel blending to reduce carbon emissions in the aviation sector. These efforts are part of a long-term strategic plan extending to 2050, aimed at aligning the oil and gas sector with global energy transformations.
Diplomatically, Kuwait has called for a major readjustment of the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. Speaking before the UN General Assembly’s Second Committee, diplomatic attaché Abdullah Bousakher urged the international community to shift from political pledges to tangible improvements in areas such as food security, clean energy, and inequality. Nationally, Kuwait continues to integrate these goals into its ‘Kuwait 2035 Vision,’ focusing on economic diversification, human capital, and digital transformation.
